Saint Gabriel

Saint Gabriel is the subject of this painting by Guariento di Arpo, who was active in Padua about 1338-1376. Gabriel, whose name means "God is my strength", has the role of delivering messages from God to humans.

Early Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca completed this painting of Saint Michael in 1469.

Annunciation to the Shepherds

This detail from a painting by Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem (1620-1683) shows an angel announcing the birth of Jesus to shepherds outside Bethlehem.

This is a detail of a painting of the Nativity by Piero della Francesca (1415-1492). Although these are clearly angels, notice that they do not have wings.

Seraph

This detail from a painting by Pietro Cavallini (1259 - c. 1330) about the Last Judgment shows a seraph. The painting shows the angel with six wings, which follows the description of seraphim in Isaiah 6,2.
