In this painting, Francisco de Goya (1746 - 1828) shows the angel appearing to Joseph in a dream. The Gospel of Matthew records an angel appearing in a dream to Joseph three times: when he learns that Mary has become pregnant, in a warning to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt after the wise men depart, and to let him know when it is safe to return home with Mary and Jesus.
